After passing health-care 'reform', the Democrats are now focusing on financial reform. This includes setting up a financial watchdog and the ability to regulate derivatives, 'the instruments such as mortgage-backed securities that contributed to the near meltdown when their value plummeted during the housing crisis.'. A fund, 50 billion was proposed to help bail out big banks deemed too big to fail, but this was met with a strong Republican opposistion, who say it would lead to more bailouts. The fund was dropped to ease opposistion.

None-the-less, republicans have united in opposistion, sending a letter to Harry Reid, the majority leader of the senate, calling for him to adopt a more BIpartisian measure. Chris Dodd, the author of the bill, calls this nonsense.

Obama then in his weekly address attacked the GOP, calling them deceptive. He targeted Mitch McConnel, the minority senate leader, saying he had met with twelve big bank owners before coming out against the reform bill. McConnel accused Obama of politicising the debate.

Lastly on this subject, a PAC (political action comittee) tied with the White House is running ads tieing Mitch McConnel to the banking industry, aimed at tea party.

In other political news, Obama has ordered a ban on discrimination for gays being denied visitation rights.

In UK news, the Dems have shot up in populatrity after the debate, in some polls tieing or beating with Labour. This would not mean equal seats though.
